Safety
Our safety program is designed to control and reduce the frequency and severity of truck accidents, product spills, and on-the-job injuries. Primary focus is on driver recruiting, training, and supervision, supported by a thorough background check on each prospective driver. Strict compliance with state and federal training regulations is monitored and enforced. Terminal safety audits are conducted in conjunction with quarterly safety meetings at each terminal location. The safety meeting agenda is prepared by corporate safety personnel with local management input and participation. Driver of the Month awards are presented to drivers who are not involved in preventable accidents or on-the-job injury and who have not received letters or reprimand for violations of company policies and procedures. Awards are given to one driver each month in each of our three Safety Regions. All driver applications and qualification files are forwarded to corporate safety for review, and a thorough background check, including reports from previous employers, controlled substance tests and MVR, is made to assure conformity to company and DOT requirements. Once the file is complete, safety approves the employment date and obtains and assigns a company employee payroll number. All new drivers receive a minimum of one (1) week class-room training as outlined and written the company's driver handbook.Special training by driver trainees is provided for drivers who have less than two (2) years' experience and is determined on an individual basis. Terminal managers monitor the progress of new employees and complete 60 and 90 day written evaluations. Safety maintains compliance with all local, state, and federal requirements related to reporting, as well ascompliance records on all drivers, logs, tanks, and environmental requirements. Markel Safety Service is used to maintain a road observation service with written reports sent to Safety. All observation reports are communicated with the driver, and disciplinary/reprimandation actions are taken as required.
